I know what you're saying,Hazel, but I'm talking about a "real" one person skill workout. V-ball and B-ball are both sports that require timing,so it's important that some time is spent almost every day to keep that timing intact.

I find it interesting that most v-ball coaches want their players to play club v-ball during the b-ball season, but don't want their players to have anything to do with a b-ball during v-ball season. Just an observation.

Wow, that hit it right on the head. Volleyball coaches want understanding when it comes to their off season program but wouldn't dream of giving the same courtesy to the basketball coach. How many other programs out there are like that? I know our basketball coach doesn't want to see the girls in other sports until their season is complete, but has to put up with kids playing AAU volleyball throughout the season. I don't hear of many programs where the two teams work harmoniously, and I think that it stems from this topic.

Hazel and GLC you guys bring up a lot of good points. My question is this: Why won't the National Federation of High School Athletics step in and limit when AAU and Club ball can begin? How many athletes are forced to pick one sport because of the time commitment AAU and Club coaches demand for their teams? I've seen many girls who stop playing 2 sports after middle school not because they want to, but because of the pressure they receive from their coaches. My solution would be club volleyball begins in March and ends in early July and AAU begins in May and ends in early August. I know that would be an overlap but by that time school is out and the players would have more time. I'm sure there are some glitches that would have to be worked out, but maybe it would keep more girls involved through high school. And aren't sports supposed to be for the athletes? JMO.

I think that would be a great idea. I also think next years new rule about a max of 10 practices before first scheduled game will help. That will mean that if a kid is on a volleyball team and lose sectional they will get a few days off and if they win state they are only 5 days behind. Out problem is that the kids feel pressured into doing some up to four sports because we are so small and now we are adding soccer in two years. We have very few athletes now and we add another sport. But abck to VB vs BB. I honestly believe nothing will work if the two coaches can't work themselves. There has to be a give and take on both sides. IT happens but not at too many places. We really struggle with summer activities because volleyball coach tells them it is mandatory and the BB coach is more flexible. He has changed his time around volleyball because the girls know he is flexible and she is not so they would miss his to go to hers.

Hey Bolderdash, your thought is good in principal, but if you change the start of club volleyball to March, won't you still have the same conflict with the spring coaches (softball, track, tennis, etc)as you do know with the basketball coaches. The only way to eliminate these conflicts would be to limit both club VB and AAU basketball to the summer, or get rid of them all together, they are good in principal, but many of the coaches have no clue about what a off season program should be about, and that is benefiting all of the kids that play equally, especially when they are paying the amount of money that htye do.

Nice try Bolderdash ,but when you start talking about national anything, remember that all states don't have the same seasons. Basketball starts as early as August in some states, and is over by December. Everyone needs to be considerate of the other's needs. ,and stop putting so many demands on the kids.

Hey hoop fans. It looks like it is going to be a great year for NWI basketball. Good luck to all. I have one comment about girls volleyball that Im not sure has been discussed. Im not sure how many years in advance a teams girls basketball schedule is made out, but if that school has a great volleyball reputation, I would hope that the basketball coach would try to schedule a later date for their opener. I would imagine that the Michigan City schools would serve themselves well by scheduling late openers (if possible of course) The old Muncie Burris teams I believe were a force years back (maybe still are) and an early or normal basketball opener would not make much sense. Again, good luck to all teams!!! -Dave
