The Red Devils avenged an earlier five-point loss to the Bison and won a key Hoosier Conference game.
Leading West Lafayette (8-1) were seniors Michelle Oswalt (19 pts), Angie Brier (18 pts) and Brooke Baumis (14 pts).
Sophomore Skyler Gick and Junior Kayla Cripe both scored 16 points for Benton Central (7-2).
Game notes: Most likely these will be the two teams to beat in Sectional 20 - I believe one of these two teams have won the last three sectionals. West Lafayette is a very experienced team as their top eight players are all seniors. By contrast, Benton Central has only two seniors on their entire roster -- the Bison are definitely a team/program on the rise. I am sure we will continue to hear more and more about their impressive sophomore guard Skyler Gick, who has a solid all around game. Although Benton Central does not have a skyscraper in the post, they do possess a strong front line with 6'0" junior Kayla Cripe, 5'10" senior Rebecca Wolfe and 5'10" junior Kayla Kepner. Unfortunately for the Bison, they were in foul trouble much of the night, as they got a little too aggressive at time crashing the boards.
West Lafayette lead the game throughout and steadily built upon their lead as they were up five after the first quarter, six at the half and nine points after three quarters. For all intents and purposes they put the game away by scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter to lead 49-34. BC did manage to reduce the margin to seven with just over a minute remaining but was forced to foul and put WL (Oswalt) on the line, and she rarely misses.
The Red Devils have now beaten two Top 5 3A teams (they won at Lebanon who was ranked #4 at the time). Michelle Oswalt is a heady, aggressive player who does a nice job of penetrating and making things happen, and Brooke Baumis is a good rebounder and finisher.
Both teams are good but would be underdogs in the Regional against St. Joe or Plymouth.
I was impressed also with the great fan support at the game -- parents/fans from both team filled one side of the stands and there was also decent student
attendance, including a pep band.
