Tuesday night game at Carmel saw two teams pressure defense force many of turnovers. Carmel turned the turnovers into easy layups for a total of 8 breakaway layups (16 pts.) whereas kokomo turned Carmels turnovers into almost nothing, hitting on only one beakaway layup while missing a few layups and in many of cases just not getting to the basket quick enough settling on playing a half court offense against a much bigger and more talented Carmel team. Carmel half court defense forced Kokomo out about 25 feet from the basket, and Kokomo couldn't seem to figure out how to get around it, and many of times tried to go over it causing for easy steals and layups for Carmel. Kokomos defense certainly caused alot of problems for Carmel as well, stealing the ball several times on the dribble and stepping in front of many of the inside passes. Great defenses by both teams, but I believe both teams also showed a weakness in handling the tough defensive pressure. The big difference in the game was the aforementioned breakaway layup points, 16 by Carmel and 2 by Kokomo, ironically leaving the 14 point difference exactly the difference in the final score. I believe both teams will deal with pressure better by seasons end, and both should fair well come tourney time. That said, I think kokomo will need to find some more offensive weapons by tourney time, Carmel has thier share. Kokomo is still trying to find some identity on offense with mostly JV girls playing, and the #1 returning starter fighting several off-season surgeries. Becca will continue to get back to last years form as the season goes, and I'm sure another scorer or two will step up with Drake and Bassinger. Good luck to both teams the rest the way!
