GREAT game as the Lady Pilgrims gave the Panthers all they could handle. This marks the second time Plymouth has lost a tough game against a high-ranked opponent as they were defeated by SB St. Joe 58-50 earlier this season.
The game was close throughout as the teams were tied after the first quarter. The Lady Pilgrims led by three at the half and by two heading into the fourth quarter. However, in the end Washington's full-court press and the heroics of Skylar Diggins enabled the Panthers to pull the game out. The Lady Pilgrims were obviously tired down the stretch as they had not missed a three throw the first three quarters (around 15 attempts), but barely made 50% of their approximately 10 charity tosses in the fourth quarter.
Diggins led the way for Washington with 28 points - a much better shooting performance than her last game in the Plymouth gym versus Kokomo in the Semi-State last year. Ashley Varner continued her fantastic senior season by scoring 17 points. Plymouth's Elaine Hessel was outstanding, scoring 22 points - her effort was very reminiscent of her performance against St. Joe last season in the Sectional Championship game. Senior Heidi Keiser added 12 points, including 10 of 12 at the line.
Hats off to the Lady Pilgrims for taking another giant down to the wire, proving once again that superior TEAMwork can help neutralize superior individual talent. However, they still have not been able to get out of the Sectional and past St. Joe the last several years - another re-match with the Indians is inevitable.
