Kokomo for years has dominated teams by the three point shot, and almost every year make more threes than opponents even attempt. Many have said for years, "You live by the three, and you die by the three!" Fortunately for Kokomo fans, we have done much more living than dying. Tonight Kokomo put their inexperienced varsity up against an experienced Noblesville team and held on to survive a barrage of threes by Noblesville. The Millers were raining threes all night long, and at one point had a stretch of 6-7 threes made. Kokomo went away from tradition and used an inside game mainly with guard speed on driving layups, and the play of freshman Kelly Hopkins. The 6'3" freshman went for 14 first half points, but got into some foul trouble to finish with 16 points and 4 blocked shots. Kokomo used a nice 8 man rotation that seemed to keep every body fresh so as to build a nice 12 point 4th quarter lead, only to miss some free throws down the stretch and watch as Noblesville continued to rain the threes. Noblesville actually had a shot to win or tie with just a few ticks on the clock, but chose to go for the 5 footer instead of the 20 footers they had seemed to hit all night. Kokomo pulled down the rebound and was instantly fouled with 2 seconds to go and a double bonus. Kokomo again missed both and watched as the Millers threw up a 3/4 court shot that hit the bottom of the net in perfect line of the goal! WHEW!!!!
In all, a win, always a good thing, but not exactly a pretty win, but credit goes out to the Millers who just kept fighting!! I would also like to congratulate our Lady Kats for hanging on for the hard fought victory.
Kokomo gets no breaks as they will travel to Huntington next week and play a very good experienced 2A squad in Oak Hill, #3 in their class. This should be a great match, as Kokomo will have to handle a very good full court pressure team with a very unexperienced team- Time to grow up in a hurry girls!!!
