The second half was barely a minute old when the Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors kept expanding their halftime lead. Montrell Mills (00) got the ball to Tasia Smith (14) in the right corner. A late first-half spurt by the Wabash Valley College Lady Warriors, combined with poor shooting by the Danville Area College Lady Jaguars, lifted the WVC women to an 80-58 victory Thursday night.
The WVC women trailed, 17-16, after getting off to a 10-0 start, with 7:34 left in the opening half. Danville’s Kassie Yates had just hit a three-pointer to give her club the lead, their first one-point advantage of the contest.
But WVC’s Tasia Smith hit an inside bucket that started the Lady Warriors on a 24-10 run. Jessica Richards put the Lady Jaguars back on top with a shot, but Smith countered with a trey and WVC never trailed again. Smith added two free throws, then Montrell Mills connected on a conventional three-point play. After Danville’s Keri Roach hit two from the line, Mills added a trey, then Megan LaRue scored on a fast break.
Suddenly, with 4:10 to play in the half, the Lady Warriors were up by a 31-21 score.
Danville cut it to six, 31-25, but then WVC completed the run with an 8-2 spurt and a 40-27 halftime lead.
“We subbed a little bit,” said WVC Coach Clyde Buck. “I think we got tired. We got down, they got a run and got back in the game. Then we got some fresh players back in and all of a sudden we started playing good defense, and got a few things offensively to go. Then all of a sudden we’re off to the races.”
The two teams played the second half’s first five minutes pretty even, but Danville never got closer than 14 points. Wabash Valley kept pulling away and when Traveshian Jerry scored on a fast break with 12:53 to play, the Lady Warriors were up by a 58-38 margin. The closest Danville came after that was 58-42 with just under 11 minutes to go. Smith put WVC back up by 20 with a five-footer at the 9:24 mark.
If there was any surprise to the outcome it was by the difference in scoring, or that’s according to Buck.
“It was a good win,” he said. “It was by more of a margin that what I thought. When we beat them up there we beat them by five, and it was down to the last minute before anybody won the game. I thought it would be a very tough game, I’m surprised by the margin.”
“But the girls played really well, with a lot of energy. We just played, and executed offensively and defensively. I’m very happy with the win,” he added.
The game was a physical contest. Mills went down on her left knee but Buck was unsure if it was twisted or just bruised.
“If she’s healthy we have a chance that we might still be a pretty good basketball team. It’ll definitely hurt us if she has a serious injury,” he added, noting that determination may not be known even today.
Also, WVC’s Sierra Buse and Danville’s Chelsey Miller mixed it up but, as Buck said, “Luckily the referees did let it get out of hand.”
By halftime the Lady Warriors had hit 16 of 38 shots for 42.1 percent while their defense held Danville to 33.3 percent shooting, 11 of 33. The two team’s kept that percentage for the game with WVC hitting 29 of 69 for 42 percent and Danville hitting 22 of 66 for 33.3 percent.
At the line WVC was 18 of 23 for the game, 78.3 percent, while Danville was 10 of 20, 50 percent. Beyond the arc, WVC hit four of 14 for 28.6 percent while Danville hit four of 21, 19 percent.
Smith led WVC with 22 points while LaRue added 14. Mills and Kristen Washington both had 10.
Richards had 17 for Danville with Sarai Rose adding 13.
WVC out-rebounded Danville, 48-29. Washington pulled down 10, LaRue nine, Smith eight, Buse six and Jerry five. Roach, Miller and Colombe Martin each had five for Danville.
