Came across this article online about allowing athletes to major in sports. Before you blurt out "that's ridiculous!", give it a read. www.journalgazette.net/article/20111013/EDIT05/310139984/1021/EDITSome of the benefits of sports that the author didn't even mention is the ability to work as part of a group, understanding your role within that group, making your actions and work ethic in response to the needs of the group, etc. Job recruiters kill for prospective employees who understand those concepts. Just by PLAYING sports, you're getting all that. If anything, they should allow the nerds to major in it since they may not have been able to make a team before.
An athlete needs to major in something that's going to help compliment what they're learning on their athletic team.
Example: I have a job, like many other people end up with, where I didn't study anything that had anything to do with what I do. Still blows me away that I'm doing it. At this job, I talk with people about everything. I think the fact I had 4 majors in college helps me talk with everyone. If I just played sports and majored in sports, then I lose all that ability to connect with my clients w/ Social Studies (Geography, History), Psychology & Science (Math, Astronomy, etc).
I think the more athletes are exposed to, the better.
